The good governance training was graced by Hon. Kasim Majaliwa, the Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania and the Member of Parliament for Ruangwa constituency on 20th of April 2022 in Ruangwa District-Lindi region. The training covered key aspects and principles of good governance including transparency, accountability, rule of law, participation, responsiveness, efficiency and effectiveness and inclusivity. The launching event drew 611 local leaders, 171 of whom were female and 440 of whom were male. The training enchanted the councilors, division officers, ward executive officers, village chairpersons, village executive officers, chairpersons of the village standing committees therefore successfully covering all local leaders in Ruangwa district.
In his opening statement, Mr. Karl Peter Schönfisch, the resident representative of Hanns Seidel Foundation for Tanzania and Uganda, underscored the significance of good local governance at the lower level of government. He insisted that the good governance involves primarily proper management of resources for people's development. The good governance necessitates checks and balances of all stakeholders in development. Controls in the use of resources are required at all levels. The target group of this training is local goverment leaders who are directly accountable to the citizens. The good governance principles apply to both national and local government structures such as wards and villages. The benefits of adhering to the good governance principles benefits both the citizens as well as the local leaders.
The Prime Minister, Majaliwa in his opening remarks emphasized that leadership is service; all those who are elected to positions of leadership are elected to serve the people who elected them. The good governance training is intended to provide local leaders with the skills and techniques required to lead the people who have elected them. It is important to comprehend the current national leadership's philosophy which is to serve the people. Being a leader requires one to be a servant; a leader's purpose is to serve those who have placed him or her in a position of leadership.
This is the core of the matter in your leadership roles; keep in mind that all you are expected to do is serve the people rather than to be served by people.
The Prime Minister commended the work well done by Hanns Seidel Foundation in supporting the local governance training in Tanzania. He urged the local leaders to be keen during the training to improve the service delivery to the citizens at the lower level. The Prime Minister insisted that such a training be provided all local leaders across the country because it is the most effective strategy to enhance on-the-job training for local leaders who are close to the people.
