On September 19 and 20, 2024, the Tanzania Centre for Democracy (TCD) hosted an event at the University of Dar es Salaam New Library Hall to commemorate the International Day of Democracy. As one of the key partners in democracy in Tanzania Hanns Seidel Foundation was invited to participate in the event. The international day for democracy engaged key democracy stakeholders including diplomats, political leaders, development partners and academicians. TCD as the host orgnization aimed to assess the state of democracy in Tanzania, reflecting on the country's democratic journey since the reintroduction of multiparty politics in 1992. The dialogue was part of the broader efforts outlined in the TCD's annual assessment that seeks to document both the gains and challenges Tanzania faces in nurturing democratic values amid a global decline in democratic standards.
A significant point of discussion during the event included upcoming 2024 local government elections and the general elections scheduled for 2025. Participants, including diplomats, emphasized the importance of ensuring that these elections are transparent, free and fair, capitalizing that democracy as the voice of all citizens, not just political parties. They called for stronger rule of law, citizen involvement and a greater focus on inclusivity, particularly ensuring women’s active participation in the democratic process.
In his remarks the guest of honor emphasized the urgent need for more inclusive democratic practices in Tanzania, especially in light of the challenges that have recently emerged including the low turnout of the voters. He reiterated that democracy thrives when it is rooted in the voices of all people and that sustained efforts are required to protect and expand the freedoms of speech, assembly and political participation as Tanzania moves forward into a critical electoral period.
