Law enforcers TIP Training in Mtwara Region
Combating Trafficking in Person in Tanzania

Law enforcement agencies in Mtwara region completed a five-day training to combat human trafficking.

Law enforcement agencies in Tanzania’s Mtwara region underwent a five-day training course aimed at combating trafficking in persons (TIP). The Participants of the training included police officers, immigration officers, prosecutors, prisons officers, magistrates, social workers, labour officers, and journalists. The training took place from the 21st to the 25th of March 2023 and was conducted due to the high prevalence of trafficking cases in the Mtwara region.

Mtwara is known to be a hotbed of trafficking cases, both domestic and international, due to its porous borders with neighboring Mozambique. Law enforcement agencies in the region were found to lack adequate knowledge and skills to address TIP cases, necessitating the training.

In his opening remarks, the Acting Regional Commander for Mtwara, Mr. Temba, acknowledged the prevalence of TIP in Tanzania, with Mtwara being among the most affected regions.

Ms. Kadele Mabumba, Deputy Head of Office of Hanns Seidel Foundation, called for the prevention of TIP cases before they occur. She challenged law enforcement agencies to collaborate with the Tanzania Police Force, which has deployed Ward Police Officers at the lowest level of administration, to prevent TIP cases from happening.

The training was facilitated by highly qualified officials from the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ Anti-Trafficking Secretariat, including Mr. Alex Lupilya and Mr. Mwidadi, as well as officials from Tanzania Relief Initiative, including Mr. Edwin Mugambira, Mr. Nyiti Batty, and Erick Mashi. The training also had the privilege of being facilitated by the Judge of the High Court of Tanzania, Dr. Elifuraha Laltaka, who shared his experience of trafficking in humans as a global problem and a local issue.

The training was highly interactive and participatory, with a mock court being practiced and role play successfully demonstrated. The training expected to equip law enforcement agencies in Mtwara with the necessary knowledge and skills to combat TIP cases in the region.
